Youth Council Meeting

November 14, 2005

 

 

Meeting was called to order at 5:15 p.m.

 

Attendees:  Royce Sampson, Charlene DeShields, Deborah Bolden, Jaron McMillen, Timmy Blake, Brenda Marzucco, Dan McDermott, Glorya Cowley

 

Eastern Shore Career Guide – Developed by the Lower Shore Workforce Alliance as a source for information to educators, parents, students, businesses, counselors and job seekers.  Brenda distributed copies to attendees and advised if anyone wanted more copies they are contact her.  Copies will be sent to Guidance Counselors Department of all middle and high schools in Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s and Talbot counties.

 

Kids Count – Brenda Marzucco attended a presentation given by Advocates for Children and Youth (sponsored by the Casey Foundation) regarding current statistics regarding the well being of youth on the Upper Eastern Shore.  She shared the local data which is available on line at www.aecf.org/cgi.

 

Chesapeake Culinary Career Day – On September 24th, thirty-nine students spent the day at the Chesapeake Culinary Center in Denton, Maryland.  There, the students were given demonstrations on cake decorating, food art, pasta and sauces, as well as lectures on nutrition and herbs, and safety and sanitation.  Afterwards, a question and answer session was held.  A lot of positive feedback was received.

 

Out of School Youth Update – As of July 1, 2005, any one between the ages 16 and 21  interested in job training are to contact Brenda Marzucco directly at 410-822-5400 ext. 266.  

 

USWIB is working closely with Gwen Handy, Director of Adult Basic Education for Dorchester, Caroline and Talbot counties, to incorporate Adult Basic Education with One Stop services to include out of school youth.

 

Council Direction – It was decided that in 2006, the Council will meet in January, April, July and October.  These dates correspond with quarterly performance data, which the Council will review.

 

Luncheon Planning – Will be held on December 29th at the Cambridge Hyatt Regency.  Invitations will be going out Junior and Senior High School students currently in program, those who have been out of school up to two years, past and present staff members and community partners. 

 

Suggestions made:

 

  • Have a representative of the Hyatt do a presentation of what they offer in the way of employment as well as perhaps testimonials from employees.
  • Present awards to honor extraordinary graduates, parents/guardians, employers, and school and community leaders. 

 

USWIB will provide transportation for this event.
